Transition - Primary to Secondary Education
The transition from primary to secondary school is one of the most significant changes young people experience.
For many, it brings a mix of excitement, uncertainty and pressure. New environments, expectations and social situations can feel overwhelming, particularly when young people do not understand why they are feeling the way they do.
The Brain Smart® approach provides a simple framework that helps pupils understand how their brain responds to change, stress and new situations. By building this understanding early, young people are better equipped to manage their responses, build confidence and approach transition with greater ease.
When young people understand how their brain works, they feel more confident and less overwhelmed. That understanding helps them approach change in a different way.

How it works
The framework is introduced through engaging, age-appropriate sessions designed for Year 6 pupils. Using clear and accessible language, it explains how the brain responds to change and why emotions can feel intense during unfamiliar situations.
Rather than focusing on instruction, the sessions focus on understanding. Pupils are supported to recognise what is happening in their brain and begin to make sense of their own responses. This understanding is combined with simple, practical sills that they can apply in everyday situations, both in and out of school.
Building self-understanding
At the centre of this work is wellbeing education. When young people understand how their brain works, they begin to see that their reactions are not something “wrong” with them, but a natural response to change and uncertainty.
This shift in understanding helps to reduce anxiety, build self-awareness and increase confidence. It also creates space for open conversations, helping young people recognise that many of their peers are experiencing similar thoughts and feelings.
Impact
They develop a clearer understanding of their emotions, greater confidence in new environments and practical skills they can carry with them as they continue their learning journey.
The aim is not to deliver a fixed outcome, but to provide knowledge that young people can draw on as they navigate change, supporting positive development.
